1.Keep them SMART
Most people have learned about SMART goals. If you haven’t, well now you’ll finally know.
Specific: If your goal is just to “exercise more” or “eat healthier,” it’s going to be a lot harder to keep it. Instead, say “I’m going to exercise three days a week for an hour.” It’ll make goal keeping a lot easier.
Measurable: How are you going to know if you did what you set out to do? Find a way to measure your success. There are plenty of tools that can help you keep track of your exercises or other goals. Along with that, keep track of how you’re doing. Keep a journal, track your weight, whatever works for you and your goal.
Achievable: Don’t tell yourself you’re going to learn how to fly like a bird within a year. Give yourself a goal you can reasonably complete within your timeframe.
Relevant: Figure out what is important in your life and keep your goals relevant to that.
Timely: Give yourself a timeframe to complete the goal. If you feel like you have forever to work towards your goal, you’re going to end up procrastinating. Whether it’s a week or a year, figure out a reasonable amount of time to give yourself.
2.Keep them to YOURSELF
Maybe telling others helps you keep to your goal. If so, this step might not be for you. However, studies show that revealing your goals ahead of time gives you the sense of accomplishment prematurely. When the best part of keeping a goal, besides the bettering your life part, is feeling accomplished, you can feel like you already did the goal and fall behind. Put in actual steps that take effort before you tell your friends what you’re working towards.
3. Keep VISUALIZING
An important part of keeping to a goal is to visualize it. Imagine having that amazing summer body, the things you could learn by reading all summer, or the amazing food you could be making if you learn how. Once you have that imagery in your head, it’ll make you more willing to work towards your goal. If you need some more inspiration during the day, get a poster that aligns with your goals to put up in your room. There are plenty of ways to remind yourself daily of your goal.
4. Keep thinking BIG
Ever heard of shoot for the moon and even if you miss you’ll land in the stars? Thinking big helps you achieve a goal that maybe is more in your reach. If you want to lose ten pounds but you think bigger and go for fifteen, even if you don’t lose fifteen you might lose more than you originally planned. While thinking big, however, make sure you don’t overreach and fall into the unattainable category.
5. Keep at it
The most important thing is to keep at it. Remind yourself daily of what you’re working towards and why and you’ll be reaching it in no time. Remember that the only one who can do this is yourself. Remind yourself that the goal isn’t going to be reached magically by itself and that you’ll have to put work into it daily.
Lastly, most importantly, remember that you got this.
